Why a granite yard still grows weeds

Decorative rock slows weeds but does not stop them. Over time, fine dust and organic material collect in the gaps beneath the decomposed granite, and that thin layer is all a seed needs. A single monsoon downpour can flush an entire yard within days.

A program built in layers

Effective control takes more than one method, so the program combines three.

1. Granular pre-emergent on a schedule. A soil barrier is applied roughly twice a year, around June ahead of the summer rains and again around December, so seeds do not germinate. This is the part that does the most work, and it depends on correct timing.
2. Post-emergent treatment on active growth. Weeds that emerge are treated with a commercial product, Roundup Pro, applied carefully to the weeds rather than your plantings.
3. Hand work on the rest. Established weeds are pulled by hand, roots and all, and scattered small growth is cleared with a hula hoe.

An HOA-compliant appearance, maintained

In communities with design standards, an overgrown front yard draws a notice. A scheduled program keeps the rock beds clean and even, so the property stays compliant. Because the same crew services the property on rotation, they know which bed flushes first after a monsoon and treat it before it spreads.
